Times, The (London, England)-March 17, 1989

A man accused of the manslaughter of a teenage boy who was killed during an homosexual orgy claimed he had been powerless to save him.

Mr Julian Bevan, for the prosecution, told the Central Criminal Court that Sidney Cooke, aged 61, told police that Jason Swift, aged 14, was killed by two strangers at a flat in Hackney, east London, in November 1985. He told detectives one of the men gave the boy a “clump” on the back. He was later suffocated.

Mr Cooke, of Oswald Mead, Homerton; Stephen Barrell, of Arnold Road, Dagenham; Leslie Bailey, of Rivermead House, Hackney, and Robert Oliver, of Forsythe House, Hackney all east London deny manslaughter. Mr Cooke and Mr Bailey deny intending to pervert justice. The trial continues today.
